senator reid has said so eloquently, dan inouye lives a full, long life and so it is our great honor to come here to celebrate it. i am grateful that so many of his colleagues in the senate on both parties, leaders and members of the house and administration and especially members of the diplomatic corps has come because i hope ms sure service we can capture character and contribution of one of the most remarkable american i have ever known. you know, it is difficult to be in politics and be courageous without being sanctimonious. it is difficult to be a gallant man in politics without seeming pompous. and it is difficult to constantly reach out for common ground without wondering if you left your principles behind. but dan inouye did all this and more. those of us who knew him can be grateful for so many thing. for hillary and me he was first and foremost a friend, an adviser, something that both of us will cherish forever. i thought i knew a little bit about hawaii when i carried the state twice in iowa that one day and he said, you know, you have a paid no attention to the okinawa

right now it's really up to senate majority leader harry reid to try to cobble something together that can get some republican support in the senate and the house to avoid the fiscal cliff. we are one week away from it, as you mentioned, and republicans are not even part of the discussions, both in the senate and in the house, and at this point they are certainly maybe having a working christmas. senate democrats and republicans, but i think it's interesting just to kind of recap what's going on here. before president obama and house speaker john boehner were working on a much bigger package obviously, not just to avoid the fiscal cliff but to try and tackle the long-term fiscal health of the country, trying to overall it was expected to raise some taxes, try to deal with entitlement reform and tax reform, those other big things like entitlement reform and tax reform get kicked into the new year, dana, so it's the gift that keeps on giving on this cli clifftmas. >> taking this pretty far. one of the key questions is whether or not senate democratic leader harry reid will be able to get
